About 30 years ago, I called Israel home. Life was a beach. Literally. Until my diplomatic parents were sent to South Africa. I was 4 at the time, so it was diplomatically correct for me to go with them. After 4 years of being the dutiful daughter, I found myself back home and as happy as a clam. Until one day,
I tried to hide this from the diplomats for a while, running an extreme water sport and dive center part time. By 15, I couldn’t hide it any more. I quit school and went on to run one of the largest dive school chains in Israel. (While schooling was completed through night classes, keeping the diplomats happy.)
I served in the army for two years. At 18, I discovered that some people really do like to drink like a fish. It’s true that no fish needs a bicycle. And without music, I was like a fish out of water. So I started a music bar. It became the largest and most successful live entertainment pub in town. It was called Doug & Tony.
“Digital design is like painting, except the paint never dries.”
“A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”
"Good design goes to heaven bad design goes everywhere."
I then got stolen by a company known today as Intel. I managed event productions and extra activities for them for over a year before finally following my long suppressed passion for Art and Design.
CUPS OF COFFEE
(okay and maybe just a little hot passion for a sweet talking lothario) that lead me back to Cape Town where I was accepted into studying at Friends of Design and inspired by all things creative. Designer jewelery retail had been mercenary fun, but life in the shop was not for me. This design study exploded into all sorts of loveliness. From job offers from my lecturers, to clients trying to head hunt while I was still studying. Not to mention some tasty top student awards. Whilst I always planned on working at an agency, I summarily fell into freelancing and ended up working on some delicious accounts and some meaty brands. Strategic thinking was about to lead me to stray deliciously.
To kick it up a bit, I opened my own company that focused on augmented reality.
What I learnt most through this experience is that Art & Design is my first love.
I’m happiest making pretty things, smart things, hell, pretty smart things, things that sing to people from a page or a package or piece of paper, virtual or otherwise. I could go on and on, but I’ll save you from a slow death hearing about my passion for Design.
